At the end of June 2018 we visited the International Conference in Ostia together with Petra Jäger from the Waldkindergarten Flensburg. Organized by L’asilo nel bosco. Already in spring we published an interview with Paolo Mai of L’asilo nel bosco.

In the morning the lectures took place in the theatre in Ostia, afterwards the participants drove to the school Piccola Polis to take part in the workshops in the afternoon. Approximately 120 participants attended the conference.

Keynote speech by Mario Polito

The audience listened enthusiastically to Mario Polito. He gave a lecture on the topic “The education of the heart through the usual cognitive education in school”,

which he developed in studies. Marion Polito said: “In general, people need not only good knowledge and skills, but also good emotions to understand themselves and others”. Especially in school, students need emotional well-being in class in order to learn well. In his book “The Virtues of the Heart” (2012), he wrote extensively about the emotional dimensions in teaching. He named the virtues in his impulse lecture: “They are the following:

– Trust and self-esteem

– Project and Vision

– Affectivity, love, empathy

– Self-control and self-discipline

– A sense of justice and dignity

– Courage and strength of spirit

– Emotional balance

– Sense of community

Teachers must inspire pupils with the subject they teach: they must stimulate motivation and only then can they encourage pupils to learn and study, only then can they demand more from their pupils. In short: first motivate and then teach. Teachers cannot teach without motivating the pupils. It’s obvious, but in many classrooms it’s not real yet.

Mario Polito has statistically studied the emotions of teachers and students at school to better understand what they experience on an emotional level, both positive and negative. His aim is to improve their communication, because only in a positive relationship between teachers and students is it possible to teach well and learn well.

Emotional molecules: The biological causes of emotional experiences

In traditional Chinese medicine, blood is described as the medium that carries food, i.e. as a carrier of nutrients from food, but also as a carrier of emotions. Only in recent decades have we understood this last fact, as our emotional experiences are translated into the production of specific molecules, biological substances, so-called neurotransmitters or neuropeptides (serotonin, adrenalin, etc.). Our cells speak a biochemical language that expresses and translates our emotional experiences, the most immediate, instinctive and spontaneous. Emotions are experienced above all physically. Since the embryonic phase, at least in the first 2-3 years of life, situations can occur that change this free flow of emotional and biological processes and lead to a distorted imprint that will overlap with other similar states over time. We are talking about superstructures that are stored in the brain and that dictate the law of cellular processes. In other words, there will be a reprogramming that overwrites what the original logic of nature provides.

Emotions that are forbidden open a rupture and attack the body.

If the child is not received, accepted, understood and taken seriously in its “feelings” (emotions, sensations and body perceptions), it tends to displace/remove unlawful experiences. However, they remain stored in his body, stored as information, often outside his consciousness (emotional blindness). Emotions that are forbidden open a rupture and attack the body. You pay for self-deception with the disease. Emotions that have no legitimacy are stored in the cells as a biological cycle of molecules that literally form a loop, overload some functions/organs and empty others. Therefore, what happens in the early stages of life is fundamental to the way we regulate stress and emotions. Candace Pert says: “The habit of being honest with yourself helps reduce stress. Emotions unite the whole body with the goal of achieving a unified purpose, integrating systems and coordinating biological and mental processes that converge in behavior.
